LSR7 Art Teacher Receives Commission to Make KCI Art

An art teacher in LSR7 earned a commission to make art for the new Kansas City International Airport.

Rachel Hubbard Kline, teacher at Lee’s Summit West High School, is among 19 professional artists in the Kansas City region whose art will be permanently installed at the new one terminal concourse at KCI. Mrs. Kline’s ceramic tile fragments will appear in the departure area. She has until fall 2022 to complete the art, and the new KCI is scheduled to open in early 2023.

Her proposal shared the inspiration for the art. “My work is based on historical connections to place, ancestry, and women’s work. The quilt patterns will be based on those published in the Kansas City Star, which published a quilt pattern each week from 1928-1961. The clay tiles will have pressed relief textures from 1950s newspaper advertising plates, obtained from the Lathrop Optimist (my parent’s hometown), as well as historical and contemporary headlines from the Kansas City Star, which I will make from laser engraved newspaper scans.”
