LSW student earns national medal for artwork, joining ranks of alumni winners Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath and Lena Dunham

Savannah Meyer, a junior at Lee’s Summit West High School, earned a National Silver Medal for her original painting “Deity” from the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, a nonprofit that presents the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards.

Savannah’s work was selected in the top 1% of nearly 340,000 works of art and writing that were submitted to the 2019 Scholastic Awards. Since 1923, the Scholastic Awards have celebrated teen artists and writers from across the country. Past award winners include Andy Warhol, Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Lena Dunham and Ken Burns. Savannah submitted five works of art, each of which won a Gold Key at the regional level in addition to “Deity” winning a national medal.

“This piece was always special to me,” Savannah said. “Because it was made of small, detailed, intricate ink lines, it took forever! So much so, that I had to take it home over winter break and promise Mr. Briscoe that I’d finish it.”

Savannah explored the concept of Greek mythology through self portrait, each figure of which represents a goddess.

“I love telling stories through my work,” Savannah said. “My art experience at Lee’s Summit West has been amazing, and I think I am in the exact right place to prepare me for college.”

Savannah aspires to attend art school and become an animator.

“I have a long future of making art ahead of me, but getting awards like this while in high school will always remind me where I came from, and what I was able to achieve while still growing and learning,” Savannah said.

Savannah’s work will be featured in the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers Online Galleries at artandwriting.org in June, and her name will be listed in the 2019 Yearbook, a companion publication to The Best Teen Art and The Best Teen Writing anthologies.
