Summit Technology Academy students and partners refurbish computers for community students in need

KC For Refugees and Immigrants in Kansas City works to supply computers to families in need. When an area business donated recycled computers, KC For Refugees called Summit Technology Academy (STA) for help.

Summit Technology Academy partnered with KC for Refugees and Immigrants in Kansas City to supply refurbished computers to families and students in need. When an area business donated recycled computers, the students knew they had a unique service opportunity on their hands. The computers lacked hard drives, wireless cards, and an operating system. The job wasn’t easy, but the students and community partners were determined to make refurbished computers available to students and families who needed them. STA International Studies teacher Curtis Cook attributed the success of this collaboration to both students and community partners.

“These students are warm-hearted and generous,” Mr. Cook said. “They have given up time during the school year and during their summer to work on this project. This community service simply would not exist except for STA’s unique collection of community partners and the technical expertise of our students here at STA.  They are using their skills to truly impact their community.”

KC For Refugees and other community organizations bought the missing parts. STA students in the Computer Networking class taught fellow students in International Studies how to install hard drives and network drives.

In May, seven refurbished computers were given to graduating 8th graders at the Kansas City International Academy. Last month, ten more computers were donated to youths through KC For Refugees. Dr. Sofia Khan, KC for Refugees’ founder, looks forward to the help with homework, ACT prep, and other educational activities that the computers will provide. Khan said the event was filled with “beautiful moments of interactions and smiles.”

STA students also appreciated the moments of interaction at the giveaway event.

“Seeing the kids after getting their computers made the entire event even better,” said LSHS Senior Eden Davis. “I got to talk to a couple of the kids receiving the computers, and they were so sweet and excited.”

LSHS Senior Ryan Hampton said the experience inspired him to continue helping the refugee community.

“Seeing the kids receive something that promotes educational opportunity was an experience that I will not forget for the rest of my life,” Hampton said. “This single experience has made me want to keep contributing to the cause to continue supporting our refugee community.”

This month, Somali refugees will receive twenty computers at their Back to School event. To complete the refurbishment for these refugee students, STA students need 18 hard drives and 17 wireless cards.
